On Friday evening last, 26th August, in glorious sunshine, Mr Ray O’Dwyer, County Manager, officially opened the new Bowling complex which includes facilities for both lawn bowls and french boules (also known as pétanque). Also addressing the large attendance was Cllr Teresa Wright, Town Mayor, who congratulated all concerned for providing Dungarvan with such a wonderful amenity. Dr Tom Higgins, President of the Causeway Tennis and Bowls Club, welcomed the general public to come and have a roll before deciding whether to become a member. The sport, he added, helped people to relax and enjoy good company.
Mr Eddie Kelly, the first Chairperson of the Bowls Complex, informed all that the game was now a major part of his and his wife Maureen’s social activity, as they attend the club at least 2 days a week and will hopefully partake in competitions over weekends.
Mr Jim Ryan, Chairperson of the Munster Branch of the Irish Pétanque Association, spoke highly of the new venue at the Causeway and would encourage other clubs throughout Munster to attend any tournaments being organised.
The ceremony concluded with lone piper Mr Micky Sheridan, who led all to the western side where Mr Ray O’ Dwyer performed the traditional tape-cutting.
